Strategy for UK Screen Heritage

In October 2007, the then Culture Secretary James Purnell announced an award to the UK Film Council of £25 million to safeguard the future of the UK's national and regional film archives and collections.

A key aspect of the Screen Heritage Strategy is its recognition that there exists across the UK many moving image collections of cultural, artistic and historical significance and that these are held in many places. The Strategy calls for the re-organisation of English regional delivery so that the public can enjoy greater access to these collections, regardless of where they live. In parallel to such access initiatives, we are seeking to strengthen the sector through greater co-operation between regions and collections in order to help create a more efficient and effective response to the needs of significant regional collections.

As part of this work, the nine Regional Screen Agencies are launching The Survey of Moving Image Collections held in the Regions. Its purpose is to create a consistent England-wide map that will provide up to date information enabling us to plan for future delivery.

The results of this survey will be used to underpin the plans of Regional Screen Agencies through which they hope to access funding from the Strategy for UK Screen Heritage.

Please note that the deadline for return of the survey is 11 September 2008.

The Strategy for UK Screen Heritage seeks to respond to the burgeoning interest in films that bring to life the last century in the UK by increasing access to our national and regional moving image heritage, and by supporting the organisations that create this access. We are aware that there have been several mapping exercises undertaken in many regions, at various times over the past 5 years. However, there is no consistent body of England-wide information, which is why we are asking once again for your co-operation in responding to this survey.
